It's time to file for spring races By Gary Ridderbusch News-Review Asst. Editor People who are interested in giving more input on local government issues can begin to circulate nomination papers for positions on a city council, town boards and three area school boards.
The deadline for filing nomination papers for the April 7, 2009, election will be 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009. The first day to circulate nomination papers was Monday, Dec. 1.
It should be pointed out that municipalities with five-member boards will have elections for two of the four supervisory positions, in addition to chairperson, clerk and treasurer. Some towns have one person serving a combined clerk/treasurer position and some have a constable position.
Towns with five-member boards include Cloverland, Lincoln, St. Germain, Phelps and Three Lakes.
The city of Eagle River will have a spring election for all five council members.
Several members of the Northland Pines, Three Lakes and Phelps school boards also have expiring terms.
If a primary election is necessary due to three or more candidates filing for a position, the primary election will be held Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2009.
There also will be three statewide races on April 7, as State Superintendent of Public Instruction Elizabeth Burmaster has an expiring four-year term; Justice of the Supreme Court Shirley S. Abrahamson has an expiring 10-year term; and District III Court of Appeals Judge Michael W. Hoover has an expiring six-year term.
