Building industry getting fast start with permits up By Kurt Krueger News-Review Editor After a two-year slowdown, building activity is on the rise in Vilas and Oneida counties this year, a trend seen by zoning officials who issue various construction permits.
A comparison of the first four months of 2010 compared to a year ago shows nearly twice as many permits were issued in Vilas, including 30 for single-family dwellings compared to 16 last year.
Dawn Schmidt, zoning administrator in Vilas County, said permit numbers have about doubled in nearly every category and that permit fees collected have nearly tripled, from $10,900 last year to $28,350 this year.
“That is a big difference. We are having a much better year,” said Schmidt. “And I’m sensing the same kind of progress in May, though the final figures haven’t been compiled.”
